Frequently Asked Questions
How do I restore a previous purchase on a new device?
Sign in to the new device with the same Apple ID you used to subscribe, install Bodhi Tree, and open You → Premium → Restore purchases. Apple will return any active entitlement for that Apple ID.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Bodhi Tree → Cancel Subscription. You can also tap Manage Subscription inside Bodhi Tree, which opens Apple's subscription management sheet.
Cancellation stops the next renewal. You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. If you cancel before the 7-day free trial ends, Apple does not charge you.
I was charged twice or charged after cancelling. What should I do?
Apple processes App Store billing and refunds. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, choose the Bodhi Tree purchase, and request a refund. If the automated flow does not solve it, reply to your App Store receipt email to contact Apple Support.
We can help explain what the app shows, but we cannot issue refunds or change Apple billing records ourselves.
How do I switch the app between English and Traditional Chinese?
Inside Bodhi Tree, open You → Language. You can also use iOS Settings → Bodhi Tree → Language if your iPhone shows per-app language settings.
My meditation sessions are not showing up in Apple Health.
Bodhi Tree only writes Mindful Minutes if you have granted permission. To check:
- Open iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Bodhi Tree.
- Confirm that Mindful Sessions is enabled under write permissions.
- Complete a meditation session of at least one minute, then check Apple Health under Browse → Mindfulness.
Bodhi Tree does not read health data from Apple Health.
Notifications stopped working.
- Open iOS Settings → Notifications → Bodhi Tree and confirm notifications are allowed.
- Inside Bodhi Tree, open You → Notifications and make sure the reminders you want are enabled.
- Check whether Focus, Sleep, Low Power Mode, or Scheduled Summary is delaying alerts.
All Bodhi Tree reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. The app does not use remote push notifications.
iCloud sync is not working.
- Make sure you are signed in to iCloud on each device.
- Inside Bodhi Tree, turn on Sync across your devices on each device you want to keep in sync.
- Leave the app open briefly, then background and reopen it. Apple's iCloud key-value sync can take a few minutes.
- If a device is offline or signed out of iCloud, Bodhi Tree keeps working locally and syncs again when iCloud is available.
If sync still does not work after several minutes on a good connection, email support with the device models and iOS versions involved.
What is included in Premium?
The free tier includes the daily teaching, full sutra and mantra library, meditation timer with bells and ambient sounds, Buddhist calendar, bookmarks, study plans, glossary, and widgets. Premium adds monthly progress, the private thoughts journal, searchable journal history and customization, and daily reflection check-ins.
Premium is offered at $6.99/month or $39.99/year, with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. You can cancel any time through Apple subscriptions.
Dana scholarship & support code
Dana is the Buddhist practice of generosity. If subscription cost is a real barrier, you are warmly invited to use Bodhi Tree Premium at no charge through one of two scholarship paths:
- Muditā path — supports practitioners with significant financial need, including low-income practitioners and elders 65+ living on fixed incomes.
- Karuṇa path — supports practitioners with significant financial need who are also living with a serious medical condition or life-threatening illness.
We extend this access on trust. There is no application, no form to fill out, and we do not collect any personal information about your circumstances.
How to redeem: open Bodhi Tree, go to You → Plan → Need Dana Scholarship support, and tap Use Dana code in App Store. In Apple's redemption sheet, enter the code dana.
You do not need to email support before using this code. Apple handles redemption and your Premium entitlement will activate immediately.
What does Bodhi Tree do with my data?
Bodhi Tree has no accounts, analytics SDKs, advertising trackers, or developer-operated user-data server. Reflections, bookmarks, journal entries, meditation history, and reading progress are stored on your device. If you choose iCloud sync, supported items are mirrored through your own Apple iCloud account.
Full details are available in the Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my data?
- Delete individual bookmarks, journal entries, or reflections inside the app where those controls are available.
- Delete the app to remove its local app sandbox from the device.
- Manage Apple-controlled iCloud copies through your iCloud settings if you used sync.
- Email forestoceanlife@gmail.com if you want a support email thread deleted.
What iOS versions are supported?
Bodhi Tree supports iOS 17.0 and later, and is currently designed for iPhone.
Where do the sutra translations come from?
The bundled translations are public-domain English renderings or Bodhi Tree translations from public-domain source texts. Translator and source notes are listed inside the app where available.
